It has taken me many years to develop the current evidence-based biopsychosocial and accepted clinically guidelined approach that I use today. It is basically about providing some relief through manual therapy (mostly massage and mobilisation) and then educating you, the patient, how to stimulate healing and capacity building through movement, eating well and a positive mental attitude. Simple, highly nuanced to individual needs and effective as possible.
My Journey:
After school, I started out as a Hospital trained Nurse from 1979– 85.
In 1981 I began learning massage including Swedish, Remedial & Chinese Massage at the Naturecare College in Sydney. Since then, I have been evolved in manual therapy in various settings.
To train as a chiropractor I completed a Bachelor of Science in anatomy (UNSW) and a Master of Chiropractic (Macquarie University) between 1990-1995.
During my training, I recognised a need and created the Fleximan cervical manikin for use by students of spinal manipulation. Review the published research work on the device here.
After graduating in 1995 moved to the Sunshine Coast where I worked in a number of Chiropractic clinics.
I lived overseas in Laos PDR in 1999 where my wife was running a foreign aid project. We returned in 2000 for our first child.
I've taught Remedial Massage since 2001.
In 2005 I attended a course in Medical Acupuncture from visiting Chinese Professor Shouzhong Ren. I was lucky to spend clinical time with a Japanese Trained Acupuncturist Helen Hays who showed me how effective gentle needling could be. I am not an acupuncturist however this taught me basic dry needling techniques that I used in the clinic extensively.
After a personal knee injury in 2007, I discovered the benefits of exercise rehabilitation and focused my continued professional development education on learning more and more about this aspect of treatment from reading and helpful physiotherapists and exercise physiologists.
Since 2010 I've been an avid reader of Musculoskeletal research which continues to refine what matters to bring about good musculoskeletal outcomes.
By far the most rewarding volunteer work I have ever undertaken. My family and I have been members of Mudjimba Surf Lifesaving Club since 2008.
The surf club provides a unique opportunity to contribute in a way that maintains personal fitness, work with people from diverse backgrounds, relax in a focused way on the beach and help stop preventable deaths in the ocean.

Since 2011 through fundraising and participation we support the Nambour and Currimundi Special School's Island Charity Swim. It is a 10-11km endurance event from Mudjimba to Mooloolaba, on the wrong side of the shark nets.
