General Health Advice

My consultation aim is always to address your problem or pain. To help and prevent recurrence we most often need to assess and address your lifestyle and general health.

The following advice is of a general nature and does not replace seeing your registered health provider for aconsultation specific to your needs.

Your health and 'wellness' depends on three main interdependent factors. By changing any of all of these gives you the best chance to achieve all your health goals.

1. Thinking, Emotion and Action

If you need specific help or suffer from mental health issues (e.g. anxiety, depression etc) seek out a Psychologist and or discuss with your GP.

Generally thoughts, feelings and actions lead to each other. Identifying your next goal, forming a plan and taking action gives you the best chance of getting what you want. Think about the main areas of life; home, work, people and things. Be mindful of how you feel about each. Set a goal, make a plan and take action.

Your physical health affects how you think and feel. How you think and feel can affect the actions you take.

Take a daily walk helps your fitness and relaxes your mind. Be here and now, breath in, relax.

2. The Microbiome, Poisons, and Medications

Medications prescribed by your GP were given for a medical reason! Follow the instructions, be aware of the benefits, risks and possible side effects associated. Before you make changes consult with your GP. Medications can be essential for a healthy life and are a wonderful modern technology when used wisely. Often medications can be reduced or avoided if you can make diet and lifestyle changes.

Everyone acknowledges positive diet and lifestyle change can be dificult but is very beneficial for your general health and how well you heal from injury.

Poisons impair (extreme ones destroy) life and health. Smoking, alcohol, excess sugar and refined/processed food, substances that cause you harm or don't agree with your metabolism - avoid them, or at the very least use minimally.

The microbiome is the bacteria that live in our gut. They affect our health through involvement in human nutrition, metabolism, physiology and immune function. Most people know probiotics help our gut by adding beneficial bacteria and have their place. Feed your good gut bacteria by eating a brightly colored plate of mainly whole foods. Sugar, and processed packet foods tend to feed the bad gut bacteria.

3. Movement and Manual Therapy

Move! The health and injury prevention benefits of exercise are well known, evidenced and accepted. Exercises are an active intervention (something you do at home) and appropriate exercise improves your general health and many medical conditions. The exercises given to you will generally be aimed at increasing core strength and progressively load damaged muscles, tendon and joints to promote healing, reduce pain and increase functional capacity.

Manual therapy is a passive intervention (something done to you) such as receiving massage, soft tissue work, joint mobilisation and manipulation or being stretched. They generally help you feel better in the short term and sometimes in the long term. Your best chance of sustainable improvements to your pain/problem (and general health) are made through both passive and active interventions (lifestyle change).

It is never too late and now is always a good time to start an exercise program. However, it must be appropriatefor your age, health status and fitness level. Injury can easily result when an activity or exercise is resumed after a prolonged break. The three elements of exercise and fitness are strength, aerobic capacity, and flexibility.

It takes time to build these elements, and is central to a sensible musculoskeletal approach to health and 'wellness'.
